Day 24 - Tuesday 12th December

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting - Day 1

I was particularly apprehensive about today. I'd heard from the other group that some people found some of the Fire Safety training particularly difficult given we were going to be in a burning building!!

The course was over 2 days and the first morning was spent at Red Ensign covering some theory with a local fireman. That afternoon we were taken down to the Fire Station and kitted out in the full fire fighters uniform!! We were given oxygen tanks and practised assembling, using and dismantling the equipment. We were also taught the basics of using the hose and also the correct procedures for searching and rescuing casualties. The last item of the day got to grips with using the different types of fire extinguishers and seeing how they work on different kinds of fires. I personally had never used a fire extinguisher and ashamedly didn't know much about which fire extinguishers to use on which fires, so it was a valuable afternoon!

Hels, MIke and I get ready for action!

Practise with the extinguishers
